Eu2P ASSESSMENT RULES
The Eu2P Certificate assessment process encompasses grade-based and pass / fail assessment for theoretical training modules.
Each module is assessed through a combination of continuous and final examinations according to the module coordinator instructions.
Specific periods for examinations are scheduled along the year.
Please refer to the selected Certificate for further details
JOINT ASSESSMENT POLICY
- Theoretical training assessment is organised module by module and is conducted in English
- All Eu2P modules are assessed by each module teaching team
- The grade is determined by the respective module coordinator, based on local grading system
- Local grades are converted into the Eu2P ECTS grading system according to the following table approved each year by the Eu2P Examination Board
| Eu2P grades translation | French marks | English marks | Dutch marks | Spanish marks | Italian marks | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Very good | 16 - 20 | 80 - 100 | 8,5 - 10 | 8 - 10 | 30 e lode |

The successful completion of a module, i.e. given at least a "pass", validates the corresponding number of ECTS credits. The assessment process is collectively reviewed by the Eu2P Examination Board.
The Eu2P Master assessment process encompasses grade-based and pass / fail assessment for theoretical training modules and a research project defence for each year.
- Each module learning outcome can be assessed by:
- Continuous assessment: theoretical training modules are assessed along the academic year
- Final assessment: theoretical training modules are assessed by specific final examination sessions per module in December, March and June of each year
- The research project defence takes place by the end of June of each academic year and includes:
- A research project written report that weights 50% of the global research project grade
- A research project oral defence that weights 30% of the global research project grade
- An overall research project appraisal that weights 20% of the global research project grade
Master year 1 grade
The Master year 1 grade earned is calculated using:
- For half of it, the average grade from all module grades under the following condition: need to be successful in each modules assessment
- For its second half, the average grade obtained for the research project assessment
Master year 2 grade
The Master year 2 grade earned is calculated using:
- For half of it, the average grade from all examinations the trainee has passed which fall under the modules he/she was registered in, under the following conditions:
- Mandatory modules: need to be successful in each mandatory module assessment
- Complementary modules: need to overall succeed i.e. obtain a minimum average grade of "pass"
- For its second half, the average grade obtained for the research project assessment

General procedure
Awarding process by Eu2P Partners Universities
The curriculum terminates with the award of a Joint Doctorate in Pharmacovigilance and Pharmacoepidemiology. This qualification is issued on one single degree. The PhD thesis does not carry any credits associated with it. It is only after three years of full-time study of active and successful research activities (as validated by the supervisors in the different institutions) that the student is envisaging the thesis defence, after approval by the Doctoral Board. The final examination consists in an oral defence of the doctoral student centred on his/her Doctoral Thesis, conducted in English language for the members of the jury. After a successful oral defence, the student is declared eligible for the award of the PhD degree.
The Eu2P PhD degree will jointly be awarded by Eu2P Academic Partners and by the end of local accreditation processes. The Université Bordeaux Segalen will issued the PhD diploma and a Diploma Supplement that records all the options chosen by the student during the whole duration of his/her programme, his/her academic achievements, and the description of the course contents and assessment systems used, in accordance with the guidelines set by the Treaty of Lisbon.
Credit Transfers
For successfully completed trainings, ECTS credits are validated with the view of obtaining a qualification. In order to validate results across the Eu2P consortium, the seven degree-awarding partners have established a credit transfer mechanism, which is both simple and transparent. ECTS credits means European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) credits. It is a European academic standard for comparing the study attainment and performance of students of higher education across the European Union. All the European Higher Education Institutions do share the same ECTS credit system. In the Eu2P Consortium, one ECTS credit represents 25 hours of student's workload.
Deadlines
Concerning deadlines of submission of papers and other assignments, doctoral students shall respect the local practices and expectations of the supervisors and directors of research centres to which they are primarily linked.
For the annual Doctoral Study Plan and the mid-term report, doctoral students shall respect the submission deadlines set by the Eu2P Doctoral Board. These documents will be submitted to the Eu2P Central Office.
Portfolio research activities shall be carried out at any time during the programme before the end of the third year and validated by the PhD Supervisor. This validation will be notified to the Eu2P Central Office.
The thesis shall be defended before the end of December of year N+3. If the deadline cannot be respected, the student will write to the Doctoral Board three months before the scheduled oral defence date and will apply for an extension.
The composition of the Plenary Doctoral Committee must be sent to the Doctoral Board for approval at the latest 12 weeks before the scheduled oral defence date. One bound copy of the thesis shall be sent to each member of the Plenary Doctoral Committee and to the PhD Supervisor, at the latest 10 weeks before the scheduled oral defence date. An electronic copy shall be also sent to the Eu2P Central Office.
PhD thesis
Thesis length and contents
A PhD thesis shall be based upon a substantial and innovative research contribution; as such, a minimum of 150 pages/250.000 signs (spaces excluded) – 1.5 spaced – Times New Roman – Font 12 is recommended. Students should be aware (and they will be reminded of this by their supervisors) that in some academic contexts and depending on the discipline they work in, their career prospects would be enhanced by the production of a shorter or longer text.
- Within the covers the various elements of the Dissertation shall appear in the following order:
- The title page
- The declaration of good academic conduct
- The table of contents
- The text of the dissertation report divided into chapters
- The bibliography
- The index
- The abstract on the back-cover
On the title page shall appear the name of the author, the names of the Supervisor, the title of the thesis and the year and place of presentation.
The declaration of good academic conduct on the second page shall be included as follows:
-
"I .....(student name)..., hereby certify that this dissertation, which is ..... words in length, has been written by me, that it is a record of work carried out by me,
and that it has not been submitted in any previous application for a higher degree.
All sentences or passages quoted in this dissertation from other people's work (with or without trivial changes) have been placed within quotation marks,
and specifically acknowledged by reference to author, work and page.
I understand that plagiarism – the unacknowledged use of such passages – will be considered grounds for failure in this dissertation and in the degree programme as a whole.
I also affirm that, with the exception of the specific acknowledgements, the following dissertation is entirely my own work."
Signature of the student...................
The Abstract shall be written in single line spacing, Times New Roman – Font 12, with a maximum of an half A4 page to be placed at the back cover of the bound thesis.
Submission process and obligations
The PhD thesis shall be delivered in English and comprise at least two scientific original papers published or accepted for publication in peer-reviewed journals, to be submitted to the appointed plenary doctoral committee.
The thesis shall be word-processed in 1.5 or double line spacing on one side only of A4 paper. The left-hand margin shall be at least 30 mm. The thesis shall be submitted in a bound copy to the plenary doctoral committee. The doctoral review report template will be sent by the Eu2P office to the reviewers 10 weeks before scheduled oral defence.
The three reviewers from the Plenary Doctoral Committee shall have eight weeks to review and send the thesis judgment, comments and questions to the Eu2P Doctoral Board through the Eu2P Central Office, which transmits them to the PhD Supervisor and student at the latest two days following reception. This review report includes the judgment on the permission for the PhD student to orally defend his/her thesis.
In case the doctoral thesis review report recommends major corrections, a postponing of the oral thesis defence will be notified by the Doctoral Board. By consequence, the student with the support of his/her Supervisor will be then invited by the Doctoral Board to submit a demand for an extension of the thesis period study.
Oral Defence
Number and localisation of the presentation
The authorization for the PhD student to orally defend his/her PhD is granted by the Eu2P Doctoral Board after reception of the thesis review report.
This oral defence shall take place in public in English language at one of the Eu2P Academic Partner's premises before the appointed Plenary Doctoral Committee. The PhD student cannot fail to attend the final examination.
As the Eu2P PhD title is awarded by several Universities, there is a possibility to have one or several oral defences organized in the degree-awarding universities, preferably with an international jury. Students will have to comply with the Eu2P regulations and regulations imposed locally.
Plenary Doctoral Committee
The composition of the Plenary Doctoral Committee shall be proposed in written to the Eu2P Doctoral Board by the PhD Supervisor and the student, at least ten weeks before the proposed date for the oral defence.
The Plenary Doctoral Committee shall include at least:
- The Chairman of the Plenary Doctoral Committee
- Three reviewers, that shall be professors and external members to Eu2P
- The Supervisor of the PhD Thesis.
The Doctoral Board shall then review and consider the proposed composition.
- In case of validation, the PhD Supervisor will be in charge of the appointment of all the Plenary Doctoral Committee members.
- In case of disagreement, the PhD Supervisor will have one week to make a second proposition of the composition of the Plenary Doctoral Committee according to the Doctoral Board comments.
The PhD shall be awarded by the Plenary Doctoral Committee on the day of the thesis oral defence taking into account:
- The significance and level of originality of the definition of the problem and methods
- The scientific and technical standard of the work
- The judgement of external reviewers
- The quality of the defence
- The quality of the published or accepted scientific publications
- All additional activities (teaching, workshop participations or organizations …) improving the quality of the scientific field.
